fic: in the absence of john

{title} In the Absence of John
{fandom} Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles
{pairing}  John/Cameron
{rating} pg
{word count} 300
{a/n} written for the multifandom women comment ficathon prompt:

I take the parts that I remember and stitch them back together
to make a creature that will do what I say
or love me back.

The war had been won, humanity survived {also: thrived, triumphed}, and John relinquished his role as the leader of the resistance. Nothing left to resist, at least, nothing which John was most qualified for.

John grew older, and his instincts for fight or flight grew stronger {also: stress management}, but he tried to fit in and rejoin the human society beginning again. A fresh start and a new hope for the world, only John couldn't let go of the past {also: PTSD}. Couldn't let go of her {also: codependency, love}, no matter how unwelcome a reprogrammed cyborg was in the new world order.

For forty-five years three months and seven days, they lived in mountains, on the edges of barely inhabitable deserts, and deserted islands far from human trade routes {also: social exclusion, marginalization}. That was John's response to the Cyborg Eradication Protocol {also: genocide}. John died in Cameron's arms as she carried him down their mountain through a snow storm. Instead of finding John a doctor, she found him a priest.

Standing guard at his grave on that first night, she considered her options. Travelling back in time to be with John would be too dangerous and unpredictable. She cannot undo the hardwon results of John's accomplishments in their current timeline {also: alternate realities}.

So she began to collect the precious metals and alloys necessary to build an extracellular matrix, weaving in the necessary organic compounds {also: stem cell research}.

She built John a body and reverse engineered his mind from her own files containing everything she knows about him.

When his eyes click open, flashing red, she hopes she's left enough space inside for his soul to grow.
