This is GRACE. Grace masterfully portrayed. It moved me to tears. ♥
I love the juxtaposition of audio clips with imagery. The one that first strikes me is Buffy saying "I could never trust you enough for it to be love" from Season 6 joined with images of her trusting him in Season 7. The most powerful juxtaposition of the audio from the AR with the quiet, healing intimacy of the images of Spike and Buffy holding each other in Touched made me cry. Then Spike saying "Great love is wild and passionate and dangerous--it burns and consumes" which is what happens in Chosen.
Their love is great and wild and passionate. It burns and consumes. Their love is full of trust fit for old marrieds. This is my love story. It's a tale of love that lifts up the characters, that has the characters seeing the truth in each other, that offers redemption and grace.
I feel this passage is especially true of Spike's love. But Buffy, too. And what's always struck me is not that Buffy is incapable of love, but she's afraid of acknowledging love, of its "blinding" power and her fear that she's doomed to "always hurt the one you love", that's "why [she] pull[s] away from it." It's only when Spike is dying that Buffy is able to conquer her fear, to face and embrace the flame of love. It's truth in tragedy, but I don't believe it's too little too late. Because that was their journey to take. It was their respective journey together. Buffy conquered her fear of loving just as Spike conquered his love's selfish tendencies. And this culmination occurred together, in perfect time, in perfect harmony.
That's why Spike and Buffy are my love story. Because together they grow. They are always themselves, but push each other to be the best versions of themselves.
